For the first time in its history, the Lancer Evolution was offered in the United States when the Evo VIII was introduced in 2003. A direct competitor with the Subaru WRX STi, the Evo VIII produced 276 hp and was available in standard (GSR), RS and MR trims. The MR was offered with a 6-speed transmission, slick-response Bilstein shocks, an aluminum roof, a vortex generator and BBS wheels. The European-only, factory-tuned FQ models offered even more performance; BBC’s Top Gear demonstrated this fact by easily keeping up with a Lamborghini Murcielago around a test track in the FQ400.
