Ford produced the 1st generation Mustang from 1964-1973 and was responsible for creating the entire “pony car” class of American cars. It was well-received by the American public, shattering predicted sales numbers. In the first 18 months, Ford built more than one million Mustangs. The 1964 model year was a bit different than all subsequent first generation cars; technically, 1965 was the first official year for the Mustang. A staggering variety of V8 engines in different sizes and outputs were available during the first generation run, as well as inline-4 and inline-6 configurations.
