AUDI S4 (C4)
The first generation S4, known among enthusiasts as the “Ur-S4” (“Ur” is a German prefix meaning “early ancestor”), was built from ’92-’94 and combined the rally heritage of Audi with a luxury sedan. Featuring the same turbocharged and intercooled 2.2 liter 5-cylinder motor found in Audi’s iconic rally car, the Ur-S4 featured 20 valves, electronic boost control and produced 227 hp and 258 ft-lbs of torque. The permanently-engaged Quattro AWD system provided the legendary handling and superior grip that made Audi famous in the 1980s. The car was equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, TORSEN (“TORque-SENsing”) center differential, and a lockable rear differential. European-spec cars were also offered with a 4.2 liter V8 and a 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Leather, fully electric, 4-way memory Recaro seats, digital climate control and heated seats front and rear are just a few of the amenities that come standard. The “S” denotes the car is a high-performance version of the standard Audi 100 sedan. The “Ur-S6” was a slightly larger version produced from ’95-’97.
