The only thing to drop quicker than our jaws when we learned the price of the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 was our collective panties.

For the low, low price of $78,995 you can get into the driver’s seat of a new Corvette Z06—and probably divorce court. The convertible starts at $83,995—a new offering on the high-performance car.

The Corvette is the proverbial American sports car. With its latest iteration, Chevrolet has taken the Corvette from a good sports car and made it great. The new car gets a new chassis, new engines and a properly designed interior the Corvette has always deserved, but never got.

For 2015, Chevrolet upped the Corvette ante by introducing the high-performance Z06 model. While we’ve known the performance output for sometime now, the price was an elusive figure. Chevrolet alluded the new price would be comparable to the previous-generation Z06, but with performance figures that shamed the $100,000 ZR1, no one believed it would be much cheaper than that.

Well, it’s a damn deal.

Three trims will be available: 1LZ, 2LZ and, uncreatively, 3LZ. Standard is General Motor’s magnetorheologic shocks. Other standard options include a five-setting traction-management system, launch control and an electric limited-slip differential.

The base trim is the 1LZ, while the 2LZ adds heated and ventilated seats and Bose speakers, along with a few other goodies. The 3LZ receives Chevrolet’s MyLink with navigation, the awesome wicked performance data recorder. All trims come with a heads-up display.

The Z07 Performance Package is an additional $7,995 and will add carbon-ceramic brakes, adjustable aero components and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. A $2,995 carbon-fiber package, which adds a ground effects package and aerodynamic bits, improves downforce.

Chevrolet hasn’t released the prices for the three trim levels.

With a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine producing 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, the 2015 Z06 will blow the doors off the previous-gen ZR1 for a lot less money, which makes us ache for anyone who recently bought one.

What makes the new Z06 such an appealing canyon carver is its performance to price ratio. The new Z06 will be the nightmare of Porsches and Jaguars for years to come.
