OK... just a quick post to start a thread for my ongoing project. I'll get you up to speed. It is a 1991 Hyundai Excel hatchback. I have had this car some time with the intention of just swapping in a 6 bolt 4G63 with an automatic tranny to make a great sleeper. After much thought I figured why not go ahead and make it AWD (1G Mitsu Eclipse GSX drivetrain swap). I have owned many DSM's and most of them AWD so I wanted this project to satisfy most of my desires in a car. I don't really have any set goals for this car but I figure I will end up with a car with a horsepower to weight ratio of 400hp/ton and it being all wheel drive it should prove to be an interesting drive. I am welcoming your comments, questions, and suggestions as long as you don't flame me to bad for doing this to a Hyundai... LOL! I most likely will not post pictures in this thread unless it is something really exciting. They will be in my garage though. I am very confident in my engineering and fabrication skills so this car should turn out great! Current status... Just in the past week I finally got all the rear subframe mounted in. Wheel wells come next. After that the car will have to be widened to accommodate the wider rear track then it will sit till the weather shapes up and it can be painted. During that time the 4G63 will get a fresh build. After paint the engine and tranny and electronics will be installed and wired. There will be alot of other modifications along the way as well. Hopefully I will take it for it's first drive on my 43rd birthday in June.

Nice! Before I bought my Talon I was looking at a 4G63 Excel myself. Not much weight to the car at all, so you should easily beat your 400hp/ton estimate! Anything special you are planning for the 4G63 rebuild?

Glad you got around to starting a thread on this! I've obviously been following your progress via your photos, and I'm really excited for each step. I think it's a great and novel idea what you're doing. I was always wondering if you had any race specific goals in mind, i.e. rally, drag, etc? An AWD 4G63 setup with the right suspension components could satisfy all the requirements of ALL the goals, lol Keep it up!

Not really for now other than some basics, forged pistons of some sort on stock rods and put together with ARP, some 272's, and a Schwitzer Turbo about the size of a 52 trim with supporting fuel, DSM link. Nothing on this car will be stock Hyundai other than the valve cover... LOL! I have also thought of just building the bottom end and putting the rest all stock and just add on a piece at a time to see how the progress goes not to mention that would be much easier on my wallet. I am in no hurry other than it just being drivable by June.

It will be a street car as long as I can get it state inspected. I'm a state inspector so that shouldn't be too hard. A lot of rules here but then thank god I don't live in CA. I'm sure it will make it's way to a drag strip at one point or another but that is not my thing. I am more a rally/ road course kinda fella and we have an abundance of places to drive on the edge here close by. I'm sure I'll find my way down to VIR http://virnow.com/ as well. The main thing is to just drive it and have fun!

Awesome, love where your head's at! :) Are you allowed to inspect your own car? I wouldn't image you could... but nonetheless I'm sure your own inspection would be just as strict as any other car's... licensing issues I would assume. CA is killer man. I couldn't imagine having a modified car there. Good thing I live in CO lol

Nice! Yeah, if I were you and the wallet allowed I would overbuild the bottom end that way once it is complete you dont have to get back in there. Although if it is a 6 bolt block with forged pistons you should be in the clear to about 550-600hp. A good chunk of HP for a 2000lb car! Sounds like you know what you are doing pretty well! Come June I think I may have to take a trip to VA.

Me and my son-in-law plan on attending the DSM Shotout in OH in August... We should plan a Revvolution met at that event... just saying. haha!

YES! I can and I thought that was a little weird and shady too. I will make sure it is legal but I will push every aspect of that to the edge of "not legal" if I can. Safety first though... The biggest thing that annoys me is the exhaust rules. It has to come out the back and I wanted to side pipe it. Oh well.

Sounds good! Maybe my car will be worthy by then! Why not do electronic actuated open dump out the side? A little bit more money, but itll get you past inspection and cops if you get pulled over!
