The only setting for an event with the magnitude of the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show is a place where extravagance and excess reign supreme: Las Vegas, Nevada. If you’re reading this article, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of and grasp the significance of the SEMA Show; for those poor souls oblivious to this annual automotive spectacle, prepare to be floored.

For 46 years, SEMA has represented the vanguard of automotive technology by showcasing the newest, cutting-edge products available from the biggest names in the industry. This trade-only show is held at the 3.2 million-square foot Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) on Paradise Road. With media passes swinging from our necks, Team Revvolution crossed the threshold into the Promised Land.

Experiencing the scope and sheer volume of the SEMA Show can be disconcerting at first, but the excitement is just like being a kid on Christmas morning – except you don’t get to keep any of the presents. As we ventured into the Racing & Performance segment, it was difficult to control the overwhelming urge to run wild through the booths, filling our backpacks with forged pistons and BorgWarner turbochargers.

The intense lighting, combined with the gleam of perfectly-welded exhausts and blinking electronic gadgetry, creates a stunning automotive kaleidoscope; everywhere we looked, there was something made of carbon fiber. Even though SEMA divides the exhibits into categories, some of the rooms seemed to go on forever.

As expected, the Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ and Nissan GT-R were the stars of this year’s show, while Ford, GM and Mopar took up an impressive amount of real estate. The lower south hall of the Convention Center was almost completely occupied by the Wheels & Accessories section and the Global Tire Expo, put on by the Tire Industry Association (TIA).

Several hours of exploring the cool, carpeted interior of the building prompted us to switch things up and see what was happening outdoors. Blazing sun and heavy bass transformed the grounds of the LVCC into one massive party scene, as throngs of people checked out rows of customized lowriders, SUVs and exotics.
