Colorado National Speedway became a smoky crime scene last Saturday as hundreds of tires were murdered in Triple Crown Drift’s final event of the year, aptly named Driftoberfest. The smell of spent E85 and fresh-cooked rubber hung heavy in the air as the best local drifters flexed their sideways skills.

Wandering through the pits, the general mood was lackadaisical, but a good match for the balmy, overcast weather. All the usual RWD suspects made it out to Dacono; the lot could have easily been mistaken for a Nissan S13 or S14 owners club meet. The 300ZX, Toyota AE86 and BMW 3-series were also well-represented.

The singles ran first, eliminating all but four drivers. After a brief introduction, the top 16 tandems ran until the final four had been selected; after the Singles and Tandem finals determined the top three of each class, an awards ceremony was held for the winners. The “After Drift Party” ran till 9 pm and gave fans the chance to score a ride-along with their favorite drivers.

The event was well-organized and executed in a timely fashion; excluding the stacks of mutilated tires, the only casualty was an unfortunate bird that wondering a little too far onto the track. We are already looking forward to next year!
