The Record Breaking Shift-S3ctor Airstrip Attack 7 by Diamonds by Wire and OB Prestige Auto

Article and Photography by Corey Davis (iMPREZiONS).

It’s sad to say, but the last time we journeyed out to Coalinga, Calif., for our favorite half-mile, side-by-side roll race and trap speed competition was back in April for the AKA Shift-S3ctor Airstrip Attack, and it was AA5. My, how it’s grown. We thought the last event we attended was big: Airstrip Attack 7 dwarfs it, in every way.

As the last event of the year, the two-day Shift-S3ctor Airstrip Attack 7 by Diamonds by Wire and OB Prestige Auto went out with a bang by hosting the most powerful and record-setting half-mile drag we’ve seen to date. To give you an idea of how hot this event is, the total attendance was tallied at 1,500 over the course of both days with 240 participants. That’s 120 of the fastest and most powerful street cars in the nation running each day. Saturday sold out in only 15 minutes, and Sunday was sold out in 24 hours. Ridiculous.

Our friends Jason Huang and Ryan Fisher, co-founders of Shift-S3ctor, got the city of Coalinga on board this time to drive spectator sales and to get volunteers from the local high school to lend their helping hands. Even the Rotary Club got involved and ran the coveted beer garden. With proceeds going to the respective groups, everyone left happy. In addition to the city’s support, they also hosted a car show in downtown Coalinga on Friday night to give the locals a small taste of things to come on Saturday and Sunday.

What made this event so large was the involvement of the host city and the amount of sponsors that attended the sold out event. Not to mention how flawlessly the event was run; these guys have it down pat. What really stood out to us this year was that most of the sponsors came out with big rigs and huge trailers to establish their dominance and presence. This really gave off an atmosphere similar to that of Formula Drift, GRC and even TX2K.

Bleachers were packed and the pits were buzzing with activity as spectators gawked at the 1000+ hp cars. Ambient sound is a petrol head’s dream with turbochargers spooling, superchargers whining and built engines revving throughout the day. As we’ve come to understand over the years, it’s not just competition that makes it so unique. Jason Huang summed it up perfectly: "It’s about the enthusiasts, the personalities, the cars, the businesses, the media, and the lifestyle and culture.” Dozens of the industry’s top manufacturers, personalities, performance and lifestyle organizations roll out to participate, support and exhibit at the event.

New this time was the addition of the Corvette Shootout, pitting some of the baddest Vettes against one another. One of which we did a full feature on—Morris’ Electric Blue Cordes ZR1. Be sure to keep an eye out for that.

Saturday kicked off the day with open runs and practice, which allowed teams to dial in their cars and make any tuning adjustments. Once complete, the qualifying trap speed competition began. As competitors recorded their top speeds throughout the day, the top two in each class were awarded the respective class trophy. Few cars are faster than a twin-turbo Lamborghini; to say OB Prestige Auto’s Lambos mopped up is an understatement. They took home the Overall Trap Speed trophies, as well as the AWD Class Trophies with a 229.12 mph and 224.77 mph.

Sunday commenced with more qualifying and grudge runs, leading into the renowned roll race competition. In this event, each car is bracketed and matched up against each other based on their qualifying speeds and compete head-to-head for the classes’ titles. It’s always quite a sight to watch these insane builds leave it all out on the tarmac. Cars are pushed to the limits, and spinouts and blown engines are inevitable. Thankfully no one was hurt.

Shift-S3ctor Airstrip Attack 7 also drew the attention of world-renowned supercar connoisseur and YouTube phenom Tim Burton, known as Shmee150. Ryan "Revvolution" Randels had a quick conversation with Shmee, who flew in to California from the UK for the event. "This event is amazing. In Europe we don’t typically ever see power like this. You may see 800 hp and that’s insane over there! But watching a 2,000 hp Gallardo set a record at 230 mph is something else.”

We didn’t think it would be possible for this event to get any better, but these guys kept proving us wrong. Two days, three new world records.

First up, OB Prestige Auto set a new half-mile world record in their blue chrome, twin-turbo Heffner Performance Superleggera, AKA "Double Trouble,” with an astonishing 230.06 mph. Keep an eye out for the full feature.

Next up was Lease Locators Racing (LLR), who also set a new half-mile world record for the Nissan GT-R. Built by English Racing, this car utilizes everything they learned from the ETS GT-R "Silver Bullet.” Now perfected, the pearl white GTR hit 223.88 mph. A full feature of this car is also in the works.

Last, but not least, LLR, also set a new half-mile world record with their Evolution 8 built by English Racing. We first saw this car at TX2K earlier this year and did a full feature on it. It was back with a vengeance and a rebuilt dogbox, and pushing 50 lbs of boost, allowing it to meet its 202.15 mph mark.

The Shift-S3ctor Airstrip Attack 7 by Diamonds by Wire and OB Prestige has become the hallmark of Airstrip Attacks, and continues to show us why. Their execution of the events and amount of clout they bring in never ceases to amaze the Revvolution crew. It’s easy to see why Shift-S3ctor has become the top dog in Airstrip Attacks. Often imitated, but never duplicated. Until next year!
